Four of seven accused in gang rape case held

The Panambur police and personnel from the anti-rowdy squad arrested four persons in connection with the alleged gang rape that occurred on November 18 in Panambur police limits.

The police gave the names of the accused as Prajval Suvarna (25), Arun Amin (26), Aditya Salian (25), and Abdul Riyaz, alias Pitty (35), all residents of Bengre village, off Mangaluru. Three more accused are at large, the police said.

When an unmarried couple from Bantwal were at the Alive Bagilu Beach of Thota Bengre in the afternoon of November 18, the accused allegedly gang raped the woman. With the Bantwal police turning away the couple without registering any case, the Panambur police got the couple to register a complaint after learning about the incident from their sources. The police have registered cases under Sections 376 (d), 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh formed a special squad comprising Panambur Police Inspector K.M. Rafique and the anti-rowdy squad personnel to arrest the accused. The squad, working under the guidance of Deputy Commissioners of Police Hanumantharaya and Uma Prashanth and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Manjunatha Shetty, arrested four of the seven accused on Tuesday.

The police team comprised sub-inspector Kalavathi, sub-inspector M.N. Umesh Kumr and anti-rowdy squad personnel Mohammed, Kushala Maniyalni, Vijay Kanchan, M. Sathish and Sharan Kali, said a communique.
