Five arrested in connection with Ullal incident

The Ullal police have arrested five persons allegedly involved in throwing stones and glass bottles on a few persons on K.C. Road on February 25.

The police gave the names of accused as Mohammed Bashir (36), Mohammed Nasir (28), Abdul Sattar (33), Niyaz (30) and Shabbir (29). The police said all were residents of K.C. Road.

The police said they have recovered six plastic bottles filled with petrol from a hide-out of the accused.

The police suspect these six bottles were to be used for destructive activities in the city.

Woman burnt

A 36-year-old woman was found in dead in her house in Mary Hill on Wednesday evening.

The Mangaluru Rural police said Vani was alone in the house and her parents Devadas and Nagaveni had gone out to a nearby shop.

The police said some persons working in a nearby building noticed smoke from Vani’s house and called the Fire and Emergency services. When the fire was extinguished, Vani was found dead in the kitchen.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Students acquitted

The IInd Judicial Magistrate First Class court on Wednesday acquitted 38 Student Federation of India activists of the charges of obstructing the official discharge of duty and rioting.

As many as 48 activists, including 10 minors, were booked on November 1, 2012, for a black flag demonstration against the State government’s move to shut down Kannada-medium schools.

The demonstration was performed while the then District in-charge Minister C.T. Ravi was addressing the public during the Rajyotsava Day celebration. The minor activists had been discharged in the case few months ago.

Man dies in accident

A 19-year-old youth was killed in a collision between a motorcycle and a tanker at Handady village coming under Brahmavar police station limits in Udupi district on Wednesday.

The police said the tanker was going from Brahmavar to Barkur, when it veered right and hit a motorcycle going in the opposite direction at Handady around 8 a.m. The motorcyclist Sampat, who suffered injuries to his head and legs, was taken to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal, where he died at 3 p.m.
