Engineering student drowns in Kemthur rivulet

An engineering student, who went swimming with two friends, drowned in the Kemthur rivulet near here on Saturday.

Police said Sukhananda Poojary (18), a second year student pursuing Electronics and Communications at the Sri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management at Bantakal village about 12 km from Udupi, had gone to the Kemthur vented dam along with group of 10 friends from the institute. Three of them went for a swim, and Sukhananda was carried away by strong water currents. The two others tried to rescue him, but they were also caught in the swirl. The duo, however, were rescued by local people. Sukhananda’s body was pulled out by the local people later.

After carrying out post-mortem at the mortuary of the District Government Hospital at Ajjarkad, the body was handed over to his family members.

Three arrested

Three persons were arrested on Saturday for allegedly transporting cattle without a permit near Budoli in Bantwal on Saturday. Vittal police, acting on a tip off, arrested Rizwan, Nayaz and Shoukat for transporting five head of cattle “without a permit” and for “cruelty to the animals”.
