Crime Notes: Woman jumps into well, loses child, husband

Chandrakanth drowns in his bid to rescue wife and daughter, at Kodavoor, near Malpe.

A woman jumped into the well after throwing her six month-old daughter into the water following a tiff with her husband at Kodavoor, near Malpe on Friday night. While the woman survived, the child and her husband, who jumped to rescue them, drowned.

Malpe police said Chandrakanth Naik (30), a labourer, and his wife Nagaratna quarrelled over a trivial matter. In a fit of rage, Nagaratna took her daughter Deeksha and attempted suicide. Chandrakanth, who followed them, jumped into the well to rescue the duo, drowned. Neighbours, who rushed to the spot after hearing the noise, managed to save Nagaratna with the help of a rope. She is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Udupi. Chandrakanth used to work as a helper to a mason. A case had been registered at the Malpe police station.

Depressed after a long battle with alcoholism, a 65-year-old man allegedly hanged himself in his home at Moodbidri on Saturday.

Sudhara Poojary, a retired private sector employee, hanged himself from a rafter around 11 a.m., said the Moodbidri police, who believe martial discord due to his alcoholism to be the reason for the extreme step.
