Crime Notes: Mangalore hospitals accused of giving wrong treatment

Two hospitals in the city – the Government-run Lady Goschen Hospital and Kasturba Medical College Hospital (KMC) – were accused of administering wrong treatment after a 27-year-old woman died on Tuesday.

Vishala, a resident of Vagga in Belthangady, was admitted to Lady Goschen Hospital on August 31. She delivered a baby on Monday and the next morning suffered from breathlessness and was shifted to KMC in Attavar. She died in the hospital on Tuesday night.

Her sister Girija filed a complaint with the Mangalore North police stating that her sister died because of wrong treatment. The police have registered a case.

Denying allegation of wrong treatment, Rohitakshi from the Lady Goshchen Hospital said Vishala was moved to the KMC Hospital following symptoms of kidney failure. Medical Superintendent of KMC Hospital, Madhusudan Upadya said the patient’s liver and kidneys had failed when she was brought to the hospital. Her body did not react to the treatment administered during the 12 hours she was in the hospital.

Woman kills self

A woman, allegedly suffering from health problems, committed suicide by setting fire to herself at Kukkikatte in Belampalli village on Wednesday.

Hiriyadka police said Christina D’Souza (60) was suffering from health problems for many years and medicines did not improve her condition. Depressed by this, she poured kerosene on herself and set fire to herself in the kitchen. She died on the spot. A case of unnatural death had been registered, the police said.

Remanded

A court in Karkala remanded theft-accused Santosh Das alias Ghanashyam Das to six days of police custody on Wednesday.

Karkala Circle Police Inspector Valentine D’Souza said Santosh Das was accused of stealing jewellery valued at around Rs. 80,000 from a jewellery shop in Karkala on June 26.

The court had remanded Santosh in police custody until September 10. He was also accused in the theft of idols from a Jain shrine in Moodabidri on July 5. He had been brought from Mangalore jail to be produced in the court in Karkala, Mr. D’Souza said.
