Conserve natural resources, students urged

Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda gave away prizes to students who had won in speech and elocution competitions organised by the department on the theme "population".

Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda said here on Thursday that population in the jurisdiction of Mangalore City Corporation had gone up from 1.1 lakh in 1951 to five lakh in 2011.

He was participating at a function organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare to observe district-level World Population Day (which was on July 11) at the University College.

Mr. Gowda said the growth in population would lead to the exploitation of natural resources, he said. He asked the students of the college to conserve natural resources.

He gave away prizes to students who had won in speech and elocution competitions organised by the department on the theme “population”. The first three prizes in the speech competition were bagged by Ashwini M. of first year B.Com., Chaitralakshmi of first year B.Sc. and Jayaprakash of final year B.A., respectively, of the college.

Ravikiran S. of final year B.A., Roopa S. of first year BBM, and Ashwitha K of second year B.Com. won the first three prizes, respectively, in the elocution competition.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel spoke. Vice-President of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Dhanalakshmi Janardhan was present.
