Committee wants sand removal to begin soon in Udupi district

The Coordination Committee of Udupi District Building Workers Associations has urged the State government to permit sand removal in the district soon.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Suresh Kalagara, convener of the committee, said that for the last one year, Raghupati Bhat, Udupi MLA, had been regularly giving statements that sand removal would start soon. It was nearly two months since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government had come to power in the State, yet there was delay in taking action, he said.

The many policies of the Union government were anti-worker. The Union government was planning to amend the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996, which was a retrograde step.

This Act had provided for several benefits to the construction workers, which would get weakened due to the amendments proposed.

Hence, the workers all over the country would be participating in a Delhi Chalo agitation, which would be held during the winter session of Parliament, and also a Vidhana Soudha Chalo agitation. A signature campaign would also be launched in this connection, Mr. Kalagara said. Shekhar Bangera, convener of the committee, Balakrishna Shetty, vice-president, Ramesh, member, were present.
