Commerce teaching notification causes furore among educators

July 10, 2014 12:17 pm | Updated 12:19 pm IST - MANGALORE:

College teachers under Mangalore University have opposed a recent notification of the State government regarding the eligibility to teach commerce in government degree colleges.

The notification said that the post graduates in commerce who have also passed Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree alone are eligible for the task.

Those who have M.Com degrees but have degrees in other streams such as Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) cannot teach B.Com students.

The Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) in its general body meeting here on Sunday passed a resolution opposing this notification of May 16, 2015.

According to the notification, Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree holders who have passed out their under graduation with B.Com, BBM, and BBA degrees could teach students enrolled for “management” (BBM, BBA, MBA) courses.

It has barred M.Com degree holders from teaching students pursuing BBA, BBM and MBA courses and MBA degree holders from teaching students of B.Com.

President of AMUCT Norbert Lobo told The Hindu that the notification was unscientific. With this, M.Com degree holders would have limited scope in recruitments as Assistant Professors in government degree colleges.

Describing it as discriminatory, a senior professor of commerce at Mangalore University said it had made B.Com “holier than other streams”.

P.S. Yadapadithaya, Registrar (administration), Mangalore University, said that the notification was not binding on the university. In the university and its many affiliated colleges M.Com. degree holders continued to teach MBA, BBM and BBA students.
