November 18, 2017 09:05 am | Updated 09:05 am IST - UDUPI

“Mamatheya Thottilu” was inaugurated at the Children’s Home for Girls at Nittoor here on the occasion of Children’s day recently. Explaining the concept of “Mamatheya Thottilu”, Gracy Gonsalves, Deputy Director of Women and Child Welfare, said women, who were not in a position to care for their newborns, could make use of this cradle.

A bell will be kept near the cradle and the women can use the bell or else a siren will automatically make a sound.

The department would then take care of the child. The newborn would then be produced before the Child Welfare Committee. After its nod, a paper notification will be published, asking relatives to take the custody of the child. If no relative comes forward within a few months, the child would be given for adoption. If it was not adopted, the department would take care of it, Ms. Gonsalves said. Latha, senior civil judge, who launched the “Mamatheya Thotillu” or cradle of affection, said that provision of this facility should put an end to newborns being abandoned.
