Class 9 student Shavin Shetty from B.M. High School in Ullal has reasons to feel proud as he displayed the miniature idols, he had created from chalk, to his fellow students. “I used a pin to etch the figures,” he said as curious youngsters sought details.

He also displayed a magic card that has been made by joining in a zig-zag pattern pieces of cardboard that were cut to the size of bridge cards.

A colourful paper pattern would mesmerise the holder of the card on opening it for the second time. This was among the highlights at the two-day district level exhibition held at the Ganapathy High School organised by Dakshina Kannada Craft Teachers Association in association with the Department of Public Instruction on Friday.

The association has been holding this exhibition for the past three years. Students from 55 schools displayed their craft, paper works and also plants grown in the school.

A vanity bag, made by cutting jeans, was displayed by Sahana P.G. and Nishami Rai from St. Victor Girls High School of Puttur; myriad patterns of doormats made from waste cloth pieces from a tailoring shop were displayed by Rachana and Sushmita, students of Government High School in Prantya near Moodbidri; the drum made by stitching umbrella cloth over a discarded small paint box were vying for visitors attention. At the horticulture section, children had displayed ginger, Amrutaballi, black pepper, ornamental plant and other plants grown in their schools.
