Business consultant ‘assaulted' by police

A city-based business consultant, Afzal (30), has alleged that the Ullal police beat him up and detained him in the station on Saturday evening.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Afzal said that Ullal Circle Inspector Sanjeeva Naik called him to the station on the “pretext” of questioning with regard to a complaint. Mr. Afzal alleged that Mr. Naik not only beat him up but also kicked him.

Mr. Afzal said that he had lodged a complaint with the police against his brother-in-law Mohammed Rafiq for allegedly demanding money from him.

He said that he was called to the police station at 5 p.m. on Saturday. After conducting a “farce of an inquiry” he was put in the lock-up and beaten up, Mr. Afzal alleged. Mr. Naik abused him in foul language, he alleged.

He said that he later got himself admitted to a private hospital in the city for treatment.

The Hindu Mr. Naik denied assaulting Mr. Afzal. Mr. Naik said there was a complaint against Mr. Afzal, for which he had summoned the latter to the station for an inquiry.

Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh confirmed that there were allegations of assault against Mr. Naik. Mr. Singh said that according to Mr. Naik there was a complaint against Mr. Afzal.

An inquiry was being conducted by Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) Jagannath, Mr. Singh said.
