May 10, 2014 12:28 pm | Updated 12:28 pm IST - MANGALORE:

Opening of the renovated Bunts Hostel Circle on Friday marked the centenary celebration of Bunts Yane Nadavara Matru Sangha, the umbrella association of Bunt community.

A grand procession was taken out from the association’s premises to the Bunts Hostel Circle. Environment Minister B. Ramanath Rai, Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Mayor Mahabala Marla, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Bunts Association president Malady Ajit Kumar Rai were among those who took part in the procession.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Marla said the association had been asking permission to renovate the circle where a memorial that had been installed was removed a few years ago for road project. “I am happy that it has come back during my tenure,” he said.

The renovation comes at a time when the police are trying hard to bring changes at the circle where there have been frequent traffic jams. The police objected to the renovation saying it would further congest the movement of traffic.

Later, at a function held at Ramakrishna School grounds, Mr. Rai asked the Bunts community members to take the lead in preserving communal harmony in the region. Bunts had the ability to move ahead by involving members of all communities. MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said Bunts have fought hard and held their head high even after losing several large tracts of land in land reforms.
