Members of the BJP Yuva Morcha staged a protest here on Friday demanding that the State government initiate steps to curtail the “increase” in atrocities against women.

The protesters said the “laxity” of the government was visible in the television visuals of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah sleeping through a Legislative Council discussion on rapes in the State.

“Women and children do not have protection in the State; and Home Minister K.J. George is responsible for the collapse of law and order. He must resign immediately,” said Brijesh Shetty, general secretary of the district unit of the morcha.

Referring to the alleged rape and murder of a 17-year-old PU student, whose body was found in woods at Thoodalli near Byndoor on July 12, the protesters said the government should enhance the “meagre” compensation of Rs. 3 lakh given to the family of the victim.
