Awareness programme on Udupi Sari organised

The Karkala-based Kadike Trust and Department of Textiles along with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Council (VTPC) jointly organised an awarness programme on the Udupi Sari, a handloom sari which carries the Geographical Indication (GI) tag, at Talipady Weavers Service Society in Kinnigoli on July 5.

A press release issued by the Trust on Saturday said Yogesh, Joint Director of Textiles, spoke about the importance of getting an authorised user statement of GI registration.

He said the Department was ready to help weavers of the Udupi Sari in every way.

‘Establishment of brand important’

R. Sateesh, director, VTPC, who presided over the function, explained the importance of making Udupi saris a brand. He lauded the efforts of the Kadike Trust in trying to revive interest in the sari.

A number of presidents, directors, MDs and weavers from all weavers’ service cooperative societies from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, and officials of Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) took part in the programme.

The officers of the Department of Textiles of both the districts, and the directors of the Trust, were also present, the press release added.
