Officials fail to take action despite evidenced report of illegal issuance and misuse of autorickshaw permits.

The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Rikshaw Union has alleged that the Mangaluru Regional Transport Office is issuing permits to operate autorickshaws in the city to those residing outside the Mangaluru City Corporation area.

Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, president of the union Arun Kumar said that permits to operate autorickshaws in the city have to be issued to those residing within the Mangaluru City Corporation area. But, the permits were being issued to residents of Ullal, Mukka, Neerumarga, Adyar Kannur and Moodbidri, he alleged.

Mr. Kumar said that nearly 100 such permits had been issued in the last six months. Last week, a representation was made to Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim, who heads the Regional Transport Authority, pointing out the violation of the norm.

“He has assured of action. But, so far, we have not seen any change. Permits continue to be issued,” Mr. Kumar said.

He alleged that the transport department has failed to act on persons holding more than one autorickshaw permit.

In one case, a person has taken permit as an unemployed youth in March and then left for abroad. His permit was now being used by another person. “Despite clear proof, officials have not taken any action,” he said.

Mr. Kumar said, they would be forced to take legal recourse, if the officialdom did not stop alleged illegal issuance and misuse of autorickshaw permits.
