Association of untrained teachers stages dharna to seek equal pay

May 24, 2014 02:31 pm | Updated 02:31 pm IST - Udupi:

The Udupi district unit of Untrained Teachers (Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Castes) Association staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Friday demanding equal pay. Addressing protestors here, B. Sundar, President of the State unit of the Association, said that as many as 25 untrained teachers were appointed from 1967 to 1984 for government primary schools in the district by the Department of Public Instruction. Most of these 25 untrained belonged to Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes. It was only after 1984, that only trained teachers were being appointed to the government primary schools.

The government had issued an order to give equal pay to untrained teachers (on par with the trained teachers) with effect from January, 2011.

The order had been issued by the Commissioner of Department of Public. Though the DDPI had forwarded the order to the Block Education Officers (BEOs) in the district, the BEOs of Kundapur, Udupi, Brahmavar and Karkala blocks were not giving equal pay to these untrained teachers.

Hence the government should take action against the concerned BEOs and equal pay should be given to these teachers with retrospective from January 2011.

Most of these untrained teachers have been working for over last 25 years. They were doing all the work which the trained teachers were doing.
