If you see a car with a kayak, on its roof, zooming past, chances are that the city’s well-known citizen G.N. Ashoka Vardhana, of Athree Book Centre fame, and his wife Devaki are heading to a river expedition.
Till recently, the duo could be spotted on a tandem. “I sold it. I bought a kayak from Kochi a month ago,” said Mr. Ashoka Vardhana, who sold his book stall some years back and is now into adventure activities and blogging. Mr. Ashoka Vardhana (63) is well known in literary circles – till recently for his erstwhile book stall and now for his blog and the ongoing audio serialisation of the Kannada translation of Charles Dickens’ David Copperfield on his blog.
On Tuesday, he was seen zipping towards Ucchila, about 20 km from here, where he and his wife set sail on a river. “We will be back only after two hours,” he said.

“As I visit mountain after mountain, I see the horizon moving that much far away,” he says. He is not fond of people who like to admire nature from a distance. “People go to beaches only to sit and eat ice-cream, never getting into water. People see mountains only from their cars.”
He, on the other hand, decided to explore nature’s beauty. . Beginning his first expedition near Mulki a month ago, Tuesday was the couple’s fourth sojourn into the waters. He is also against the filth and drainage that is spoiling the water bodies and has been protesting on his blog.
