Smoke-free village campaign launched

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) on Sunday launched a smoke-free village campaign to help four villages in Mangaluru taluk stop using firewood and kerosene as fuel.

The villages are Soorinje, Chelaru, Permude and Jokatte.

Under the campaign, below poverty level (BPL) families have been identified and are given free LPG kits and gas stove. In the first phase, about 200 families from Soorinje and Chelaru gram panchayats were distributed the free kits on Sunday.

In the second phase on February 15, Permude and Jokatte gram panchayats will be covered.

Inaugurating the programme on Sunday, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, said that the campaign was part of the government’s Swachh Bharat Mission providing cleaner fuel to the poor and rural households.
