Review norms not followed

Mangalore University is yet to review the performance of autonomous colleges, though it is bound to do so under the statute governing the grant of autonomy.

In the absence of a review, these institutions could use certain provisions for “commercial purposes”, according to a veteran teacher of a reputed autonomous college here, who did not want his name to be mentioned.

The teacher alleged that many autonomous colleges were offering postgraduate courses for commercial gains. Otherwise, they could have offered postgraduate courses in Konkani, Beary and Kodava, he said.

K. Chinnappa Gowda, Registrar (Administration) of the university, said that the university was taking steps to review the performance of two autonomous colleges as they had paid the fee for it.

They collect registration fee, sports fee, cultural activities fee, career guidance fee from students and have to transfer them to the latter.

Meanwhile, the university is said to be contemplating amending the statute with regard to the demand of autonomous colleges for grant of complete freedom.

The university's Academic Council, which discussed a draft of the amended statute last month, had sought it to be reviewed by a committee of senior professors of the university.
