The Department of Public Instruction is planning to improve the quality of teaching for Class 10. The move comes after Udupi slipped to fourth position in this year's SSLC rankings.
Udupi district was at the top of the last year's ranking list with 86.39 per cent passes compared to 77.3 per cent this year.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) B.V. Mahidas on Sunday attributed this to the poor performance of private students. Of the 904 private candidates who appeared for SSLC examination this year, only 68 passed.
Otherwise, Udupi district would be in second position with 81.35 per cent passes., he said.
Mr. Mahidas said that he was contemplating asking the District Institute of Education and Training, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the Government College of Teachers' Education, Mangalore, to prepare a programme to improve the quality of teaching at the SSLC level in the district.

Another aspect of this year's SSLC results was the decline in the number of schools securing 100 per cent passes. Comaprd with 31 schools in 2009 only 12 schools secured 100 per cent results this year.
According to Mr. Mahidas, the change in question paper pattern was one of the reasons for this situation. “Our students and teachers may not have adjusted to the new pattern. We have to find out the problem areas and address them quickly,” he added.
