Pathala award for Govinda Serigara

Sri Pathala Yaksha Pratishtana, Edaneeru (Kasaragod), has chosen Margoli Govinda Serigara, senior Yakshagana artiste (Badaguthittu), for this year's Pathala Prashasthi.

The award comprises Rs. 5,000 and a citation. It will be presented to him at a function at Edaneeru Math on April 15, according to a press release.

Mr. Serigara (84) is a well-known “stree veshadhari” (one who plays female roles).

Mr. Serigara, who gave his first Yakshagana performance at the age of 13, is a recipient of several awards, including the honorary award of the erstwhile Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy.

He was associated with Yakshagana “melas” (touring troupes) such as Saligrama, Idagunji, Perdoor, Saukuru, Amrutheshwari, Kamashile, Kuudlu, and Marankatte.

He is well-known for his portrayal of Meenakshi, Shashiprabha, Bhramarakuntale and Chitrangadhe.

Mr. Serigara, who lives near Kundapur in Udupi district, has trained several Yakshagana artistes.
