Nutan Sakhardande to receive Mathias Family Poetry Award

Konkani poet Nutan Sakhardande from Mapusa in Goa, has been chosen for the Kavita Trust’s Mathias Family Poetry Award for 2016.

The award comprises of a cash prize of ₹25,000, citation and a memento. The award is given every year by Joseph Mathias, Managing Director of Merit Freight Systems, on behalf of his family.

A release here said the award would be presented during ‘Kavita Sambhram’ to be held on February 5 at Gallerie Orchid, K.S. Rao Road, Mangaluru at 4 p.m. by MLA J.R. Lobo. ‘Rastya Degechim Fulam’, a collection of poems by poet M.P. Rodrigues will be released on the occasion, and a poetry session will be held where V.K. Yadav, Wilson Kateel, Naveen Surathkal, and Suresh Baliga will recite their poems.

Born in Marcela, Goa, in December 1958, Ms. Sakhardande has been writing poems for the past 30 years. She has published two collection of poems ‘Jinn Zali Kasturi’ and ‘Password’. Her poem ‘Shennillo Ganv’ has been translated and published into 18 Indian languages. Her poems are being taught in high school and to university students in Goa, the release said.

Mathias Family Poetry award was instituted in 2008 and Ms. Sakhardande is the 9th recipient of the award.
