A large number of residents from Mahakalipadpu near Jeppu staged a protest at Mahakalipadpu in the city on Thursday demanding asphalting of the road connecting their area with the Morgan's Gate. The residents are demanding better sewer line and a flyover or an underpass at the Mahakalipadpu railway crossing.

The residents and shopkeepers under the aegis of Tulunada Rakshana Vedike took out a march from the railway crossing to the Morgan's Gate Circle. The shopkeepers downed the shutters of their shops and then blocked the movement of traffic on this busy road that connects the National Highway 17 with Pandeshwar, Attavar and Boloor areas of the city.

“Morgan's Gate-Mahakalipadpu Road has not been asphalted for the last three years,” said Rajagopal, who runs a grocery shop near the level-crossing. The road was filled with potholes and accidents occur frequently, he said.

The other problem had been the railway gate at the level-crossing. The residents said that for most part of the day, this level-crossing was closed for movement of trains.

“As many as 46 trains move regularly on this route and the gate is closed for nearly 5 or 6 hours in a day,” said Yogish Shetty, president of Tulunad Rakshna Vedike.
