World Konkani Centre has instituted the ‘Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund’ (VKSSF) to promote higher education among economically backward sections of the Konkani speaking community.
The Centre will award scholarship to 135 Engineering and MBBS aspirants at a function to be held on Friday to coincide with the ‘Konkani Manyata Diwas’ celebrated to commemorate the inclusion of Konkani Language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. Scholarships worth Rs. 40.5 lakhs will be distributed on this occasion. Basti Vaman Shenoy, President and Founder, World Konani Centre will proclaim the World Konkani Vision Statement at this function, according to a statement issued by the Centre here on Wedensday.
The Centre received 350 applications for the scholarship and 135 of them were chosen based on CET ranking. An orientation programme was held for the awardees and their parents to acquaint them with the aims and objectives of the scholarship, the release said.

A Governing Council has been constituted to administer the fund. Headed by U. Ramadas Kamath, Senior Vice President, Infosys Technologies Ltd., Bangalore it has Pradeep G. Pai, Managing Director of Hangyo Ice Creams Pvt. Ltd., as the secretary, the release said. The fund was instituted on the suggestion of T. V. Mohandas Pai, Director, Infosys Technologies and a patron trustee of Centre.
The students with family income below Rs 2 lakhs per annum and procure merit seats are eligible for the scholarship. An eminent local professional like doctor or chartered accountant should recommend the family and student. Student should be willing to sponsor 2 students after completion of studies and after securing employment, the release said.
