Journalists from across the district staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s ffice here on Friday against Wednesday’s attack on television cameraman Wilfred D’Souza, allegedly by the members of the sand mafia. The protest was organised by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association.

Journalists who addressed the gathering pointed out that this was not the first time that they had been targeted in the district. In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister through the district administration, the association demanded immediate action against the alleged illegal extraction of sand in the district and its smuggling across the border to Kerala.

Later, at an interaction with Inspector-General of Police Gopal B. Hosur, Mr. D’Souza’s colleagues said that he and his family members were still facing threats from those who attacked him on Wednesday.
