The programme being organised by the Centre for Gandhian and Peace Studies, will be held in the Academic Block 3, NLH, Manipal Institute of Technology.

The Lok Biradari Prakalp, a project intended to ameliorate the plight of villagers and tribal people, was initiated in 1973 by late Baba Amte, a veteran Gandhian, who was conferred with the Magsaysay award much earlier.

His son and daughter-in-law, Prakash Amte and Mandakini Amte, medical doctors by profession, joined the project in 1974 by opening a centre there for free medical care.

They later started many activities there including a residential school, a dispensary, a home for animals and a handicrafts centre.

The couple was presented the Magsaysay Award in 2008 for Community Leadership considering their remarkable service to rural and tribal Maharashtra. A film, based on their work in that region, will be screened on the occasion.

The certificate course in Gandhian and Peace Studies is being offered for the fourth time by the centre and about 60 students have opted for it this time, the release said.
