The Karavali Karnataka Janabhivrudhi Vedike will organise street plays for three days from Friday to generate awareness about drinking water crisis that the city is likely to face following scanty rainfall and the loss of water during distribution.

Vedike’s convenor Sampath Kumar Shetty told presspersons here on Thursday that considerable amount of water out of 150 million litres a day drawn from Nethravathi river for Mangalore went waste because of leakage and unauthorised usage. There was the possibility of industries drawing more water than what they were permitted from the Sarpady dam, which was upstream of the Thumbe Dam, the main source of drinking water for the city. All these factors would result in a water crisis similar to what the city faced this April. Vedike’s legal coordinator Vidya Dinker said conducting street plays was part of a series of events that the vedike had planned to generate awareness about the impending water crisis. People need to raise their voice to protect their rights to secure clean drinking water. Vedike had written to the Mangalore City Corporation’s councillors about the grim water situation.

Ms. Dinker said street plays would be staged by members of Tarikita troupe. The first play would be staged opposite the MCC office at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. The final play would be staged near Kadri Park on November 4.
