Cultural programmes lent colour to Republic Day celebrations

‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' presented by schoolchildren

Students of St. Marys English Medium High School performing ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ at Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium during Republic Day celebrations in Udupi on Thursday.

The cultural programmes added colour to the Republic Day celebrations held at the Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium here on Thursday.

After parade and Republic Day speech, students of G. Shankar Government Women's First Grade College and Postgraduate Centre performed a brilliant aerobic exercise, which was based on the theme of patriotism. The fast moving aerobic exercise set the tone for other programmes.

Magical pull

The Mile Sur Mera Tumhara programme presented by the students of St. Mary's English Medium High School focused on the theme of unity in diversity. In this programme, students came dressed in the attires of different States. The programme was set on the song Mile Sur Mera Tumhara , which used to be telecast on the Doordarshan's national network in its heyday. The performance given by the students to the tunes of the song emphasised unity in diversity, showed that it had lost none of its appeal over the years, and still retained the magical pull. The performance of the students gelled with the song.

This was followed by “Sangeet Nritya Lahari” by students of St. Cecily's High School. Then students of St. Francis Xavier High School presented a dance programme set to the tunes of “Maa Tujhe Salaam – Vande Mataram” of the music director A.R. Rahman.

The students of the Ajjarkad Government High School presented the patriotic song
