Code of conduct in force from Wednesday

Filing of nominations for the elections to 200 of the 203 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada will begin on April 21 and end on April 28. Elections will be held in a single phase between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 12.

The nominations will be scrutinised on April 29 and the last date for withdrawal is May 3. The election code of conduct in the 200 gram panchayat areas would be in force from April 21 to May 18, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said in a press conference here on Monday. The three gram panchayats left out of the election are, Pudu in Bantwal taluk, and Venoor and Arambodi in Belthangady taluk. They have been left out because their terms have not yet expired. Of the 3,208 seats in the 200 gram panchayats, 1,434 are reserved for women.

Mangalore (Tural) taluk has 49 gram panchayats with 938 seats, which is the highest in the district. Bantwal has 804 seats and 46 panchayats. Belthangady has 41 panchayats and 583 seats. Puttur has 37 panchayats and 563 seats while Sullia has 27 panchayats and 320 seats.

He said that of the 8,96,719 registered voters in these areas, 4,51,113 were women. Of the 1,115 booths to be set up for polling 336 had been identified as sensitive and 181 as hypersensitive, he said.
