Choice-based scheme for PG courses gets nod

Pending Government approval, the decks have been cleared for the introduction of the choice-based credit semester system for postgraduate courses in Mangalore University, which allows students of one stream to study one of the prescribed subjects of another stream. An arts student will henceforth be able to study a commerce subject, if he/she wants to.

The Academic Council of Mangalore University in its meeting on Tuesday approved the revised regulations governing the introduction of the choice-based credit semester system for its postgraduate courses. The council also approved the revised syllabi for 38 postgraduate courses, which will come under the new system.

Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy, who presided over the meeting, said that the revised regulations would be sent to the Government for approval. If approved before the commencement of classes of current academic year, the university would implement it immediately. Otherwise, the university would have to implement it from the next academic year. Mr. Murthy said that the university had given affiliation to 14 new degree colleges this year. The degree classes would begin on July 8.

New courses

Mr. Murthy said that University College, a constituent college of the university at Hampankatta here, would offer M.Com. course from this year.

Another constituent college, Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College in Madikeri, would offer Bachelor of Arts in Human Resource Development. It would also introduce a new combination consisting of Economics, Sociology and Data Processing in the existing BA course, he said.

Results

The Vice-Chancellor said that the results of the undergraduate and postgraduate examinations conducted in April-May-June would be announced before July 25.

It had already announced the results of 60 per cent of its postgraduate courses and the rest would be announced by July 12.

Mr. Murthy said that computerisation of tabulation had helped the university announce the results fast.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the results of the re-evaluation of answer scripts of BBM and BCA examinations conducted in November, 2009 will be announced on Wednesday and those of B.Com. and BA courses will be announced in a week's time.

Entrance tests

Mr. Murthy said that the university might conduct entrance tests for admission to all postgraduate courses for 2011-12. A final decision had not been taken yet. Now, it was conducting entrance tests for admission to select postgraduate courses. Registrar (Administration) K. Chinnappa Gowda and Registrar (Evaluation) P.S. Yadapadithaya were present.
