ABVP protest in Mangalore, Udupi

Members of ABVP staging a dharna in front of Deputy Commissioners Office in Udupi on Thursday.

Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged protests in different parts of Dakshina Kannada on Thursday against commercialisation of education.

They staged protests at Ambedkar Circle and Karnatka Polytechnic Junction here and in Surathkal and Moodbidri in Mangalore taluk, according to Purushotham Sullia, president of district unit of the ABVP. The ABVP urged the Union Government to bring in legislation for fixing a uniform fee structure for professional courses in all States.

In addition, it urged the State Government to keep a vigil on self-financing courses started by universities as they charged hefty fees.

The fee structure of self-financing courses differed among various universities in the State, Mr. Sullia said.

B. Harsha, organising secretary of the Mangalore division of the ABVP, addressed the protesters at Ambedkar Circle.
