9 cases of election code breach in Udupi

M.T. Reju, Deputy Commissioner, said on Saturday that nine cases of violation of model code of conduct had been booked in Udupi district.

Mr. Reju told reporters that three cases each had been booked in Byndoor and Udupi while one case each in Kundapur, Kaup, and Karkala. Of the two cases booked in Byndoor, two were against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one case against an independent candidate.

A case each had been booked against an independent candidate in Kundapur and Kaup.

Two cases had been booked against Congress and one against BJP in Udupi. A case had been booked against the BJP in Karkala. An amount of Rs. 5 lakh had been seized at the Hejmady check-post recently.

Excise violations

As many as 60 cases of excise violation had been booked in the district and 21 persons had been arrested and alcoholic beverages worth Rs. 1 crore had been seized.

The district administration had withheld seven doubtful cases of “paid news”. In these seven cases, some candidates had sought permission for their CDs to be telecast on different local television channels. But the district administration denied permission as it felt these were cases of “paid news”.

The indelible ink would be applied to the ring finger of the left hand during the polling for the Assembly elections. The polling booths would be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the polling day of May 5.
