16-year-old murder case cracked; accused arrested in Tirupur

The Dakshina Kannada police arrested a person from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu for his alleged involvement in the murder of his wife in Bantwal taluk in 1998.

Superintendent of Police S.D. Sharanappa said that Raju, a native of Oddanchatram, was reportedly at large after murdering his wife.

Raju had a marital discord with his wife Devi following which he slit his wife’s neck that led to the latter’s death in a rented house in Kumpana Majalu in Bantwal.

Clues obtained in 2012

Mr. Sharanappa said that police efforts to trace Raju soon after the murder were in vain. Not much action was taken in the subsequent years.

The police started working on some clues obtained in 2012.

Tip-off

A few weeks ago, the police were tipped off about Raju’s presence in a house in Mulanur in Tirupur.

With the help of Tamil Nadu police, the Dakshina Kannada police arrested him on Friday, he said.

Mr. Sharanappa gave away Rs. 10,000 cash award to the team involved in arresting Raju.

This is the second time that the Dakshina Kannada police have arrested the accused wanted in a murder case that occurred in the last decade.

In August, the police arrested Vishwanath Shetty in connection with the murder of a finance firm owner Vishwanath Rai in Uppinangady in 2001.
