14 dams will be built under Paschimavahini: Madhwaraj

Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports said on Friday that 14 vented dams/salt water prevention dams will be constructed in Udupi district under the Paschimavahini Project at a cost of ₹52.6 crore.

He was speaking after unfurling the national flag at the Republic Day function organised by the district administration, here.

Mr. Madhwaraj said that the action plan for the construction of these dams had already been approved and the estimates had been submitted for approval.

As many as six Karnataka Public Schools would be started in Udupi district. The government would release ₹10 lakh for provision of basic facilities at these schools.

The extension work of the first and second stages of Malpe fisheries harbour was under progress. An amount of ₹5 crore had been sanctioned for this purpose.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests had cleared the proposal for the construction of a fisheries harbour at Hejmady at a cost of ₹122 crore. The proposal had been submitted to the Union government for its approval.

Places had been identified for the construction of Indira Canteens at Udupi, Manipal, Karkala and Kundapur. They would be constructed soon. Tenders had been floated for providing food at these canteens.

An amount of ₹4.82 crore had been provided for repair and construction of building for six government hospitals in the district, while ₹9.63 crore had been allocated for the construction of buildings in 97 schools/colleges in Udupi district. Six new anganwadi buildings would be constructed at a cost of ₹60 lakh in the district, he said.

One of the biggest problems in the district was garbage disposal. To tackle this problem, a ‘Swachh Udupi’ programme had been drawn up. It aimed at making Udupi, a ‘garbage-free district’ by October 2, 2018.

Already 1,000 volunteers had been trained in Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM). The SLRM Centres had started functioning in Nitte, Eedu, Hebri and Mudar in Karkala taluk, Vandse in Kundapur taluk and Varambally in Udupi taluk, Mr. Madhwaraj said.
