Women relieved of chains at Alagarkoil

August 02, 2011 11:42 am | Updated 02:11 pm IST - MADURAI:

After a lull, robbers have struck again in Alagarkoil, targeting women devotees. About 30 sovereigns from three women had been robbed on a single day on Monday.

Madurai Rural Police said that in the first case, a woman who was returning down the hill in the temple-operated bus lost her jewel when a youth pulled her gold chain and vanished. In the second incident, a motorcycle-borne robber wearing full-mask helmet snatched a gold chain from a 60-year-old woman and sped away. Another woman was also relieved of her gold chain in a similar fashion.

As all the three incidents were reported within the temple area on a single day, police suspect that the same gang might have committed the crime utilising the huge crowd at the hill temple. Further investigation is on.
