A 45-year-old woman from Srivilliputtur was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital, here, with complaints of severe abdominal pain and lower back ache. Preliminary investigation revealed that she had multiple stones in bilateral kidneys and pancreas apart from diffuse softened bones in the entire spine. There were also fractures in some of bones.
As she had difficulty in walking, she had been bedridden for the past six months. Further investigations revealed that she was suffering from parathyroid adenoma with primary hyperparathyroidism, an extremely rare condition that affects one among one lakh people.
The doctors planned for a surgical excision and a team headed by Prof. Dr. P. Amutha, HOD of Surgical Endocrinology and comprising Dr. S. Muthukumar, Assistant Professor of Surgical Endocrinology, Dr. Sridhar, Medical Endocrinologist and Prof. Dr. Kalyanasundaram, anaesthetist, performed the surgery that lasted three hours and the gland was excised.

Post surgery, the patient was able to walk.
The surgery was performed free of cost under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
