Inspector General and Commissioner of Police P. Kannappan handed over cheques to the tune of Rs.3.20 lakh to about 30 persons – all legal heirs and dependents of persons who were either killed in gruesome murders or those who suffered grievous injuries – in the city on Sunday.
Police said that the government sanctioned financial assistance to the family members, who lost their kith and kin in clashes and which were reported in the police stations for appropriate legal action. On the occasion, the Commissioner inquired with some of the legal heirs, who lost their key family member, about the economic conditions. Last year, a police constable, who was on duty at the Madurai Corporation was arrested after he was found to have allegedly shot an aged woman, who was identified as his relative. Again, after a few months, the policeman shot dead another relative in Singarayar Colony and was arrested. The family members who lost their relative received the assistance from Mr. Kannappan.
Mr. Kannappan also presented awards to the best performing police officers in the city, in particular, the finger print experts responsible for solving the bank theft case in SS Colony. The traffic police were commended for their good works in bringing changes in the city.
