Educating the youth in the right direction, providing quality health care for economically weaker sections, and coaching students for competitive examinations were the need of the hour, said M. V. Muthuramalingam, Chairman, Velammal Educational Trust, here on Wednesday.
He said that for these community initiatives, the trust had earmarked ₹ 7 crore this year. Velammal Community Service, a voluntary initiative floated by the trust, had identified Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Pudukottai districts for implementing projects related to achieving these objectives.

In each of these districts, Velammal Community Service had posted 50 unemployed graduates on payment of a monthly stipend of ₹ 6,000to educate elderly and poor people on the need for proper health care. Velammal Medical College and Hospital would treat the poor free of cost under the government’s health insurance scheme.
The volunteers would also identify 10 bright students completing school finals in each district every year and offer them tuition and pay their fees to pursue higher education, Mr. Muthuramalingam said.
Velammal Community Service had planned to offer coaching classes for poor students studying in government and corporation/municipal schools in these districts to write competitive examinations such as NEET and JEE.

It would present awards to school final toppers in these districts every year. Exhibitions on arts and science would also be conducted at district level to enable students to demonstrate their skills, he said.
