Veerappan accomplice, accused in kidnap case

Three of four kidnappers remanded to judicial custody

Three of the four kidnappers, who were arrested by the district police on Friday night after a hot chase, were remanded in judicial custody.

The fourth has been admitted to the Madurai Government Hospital with a fractured leg sustained while trying to flee after opening fire at the police.

Superintendent of Police C. Sakthivel said the Thirupachethi police have registered a case against N. Satyamurthy (41) and three of his accomplices under section 307IPC.

They were produced before the Judicial Magistrate in Manamadurai on Saturday and remanded in judicial custody.

While K. Prabakaran (41), who fracturedhis leg, was admitted to Government Hospital in Madurai, three others, P. Saravanan (26), Satyamurthy and R. Maharajan (30) were lodged in prison.

The SP said M. Rajendran (40) of Arasampatti, near Kallikudi in Madurai, who was rescued from the kidnappers, has been handed over to his relative, who had lodged a complaint with the Madurai police about the kidnap.

He will be produced before the investigating officer in Madurai, the SP said.

Interrogations revealed that Satyamurthy, who opened fire at the police, was an office bearer of Naam Tamizhar Katchi and had been associated with slain forest brigand Veerappan for nearly a year.

He was facing criminal cases in Sathyamangalam police station, the SP added.
