Van tragedy: bodies of 10 persons retrieved

4 women, 3 children among those killed

The Madurai Rural Police confirmed on Friday that 10 passengers including four women and three children had died and their bodies were retrieved from the well.

On Thursday, 13 passengers, who were travelling in a van from Thevaram in Theni district to Tuticorin after dropping a newly wedded couple in their in-laws residence were killed as the van fell into a road side well at Nakkalakottai, near Thirumangalam in Madurai district.

On information, the police and the fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the village.

The operation went on till wee hours of Friday.

The villagers voluntarily extended help in retrieving the bodies and a special appreciation had to be accorded to the police officers led by Superintendent of Police Asra Garg.

Names of the deceased

The names of the deceased persons were given as: Saravana Vishwa (5) son of Madhavan of Tuticorin, Chitiravelu Nadar (60), Murugambal (55) wife of Chitiravelu, Balakrishnan (29), Rajeswari (34) wife of Mani, Aruna (37) wife of V. Karuppasami, K. Sanjay (9) son of Karuppasami, K. Kailash (10) son of Karuppasami, van driver Anupsakthi (25) son of Mahalingam and Periathai (50) wife of Periasami.

The three injured persons Madhavan, Karuppasami and Mani are undergoing treatment for head injuries and shoulder dislocation in the hospital.
