Tribal children screened

The Soroptimist International, Madurai organised a free health check up for 30 tribal children from Usilampatti, Theni and Ariyalur who were attending a summer camp organised by the Justice Shivraj V. Patil’s foundation in the city on Sunday.

The children were given a talk on gender sensitisation by Dr. Sudha Dheep.

A health awareness programme was also organised by the Soroptimist International on Sunday to mark Women’s day at the Devadoss Multispeciality hospital.

The programme was aimed at making women aware about osteoporosis and cervical cancer as well as shedding some light on the bonding between embryo and parents.

Muthukumar Balaji, consultant Orthopaedic surgeon addressed the gathering about Osteoporosis and how an active life with good exercise, sufficient intake of calcium and a healthy diet could go a long way in preventing it. Gynaecologist Heera Banu spoke on the prevention of cervical cancer and said that it could be prevented through a vaccine.

She also encouraged women to go through a non-invasive pap smear test once in three years to check for cervical cancer.

Dr .Kalyani further spoke on “enlighten the embryo” and said that the whole world could be changed by a single woman, as she held the key to the upbringing of a child from the embryo stage.

Latha Abiruben, President, Soroptimist International, Madurai and Vice President Sangeetha also spoke at the event, which was presided over by Savithri Devadoss, Director, Devadoss Multispecialty Hospital.
