The Level II community coaches training programme for special educators, coaches and parents, organised by Special Olympics Bharath -Tamil Nadu in association with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), was inaugurated by M. Shanmugam, Regional Director, at the IGNOU’s Regional Centre at Sikkandar Chavadi here on Friday.

Forty-five participants attended the programme in which training in group games was given by P. Paul Devasagayam, Area Director, Special Olympics Bharat – Tamil Nadu.

All the participants were given theoretical and practical exposure so as to be able to train the disabled children. Dr. Devasagayam highlighted the importance of teaching sports and games to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. IGNOU was of great help in promoting these community-based programmes, he said.

Also Sarva Siksha Abiyaan (SSA) ensured that teachers could go to remote areas to have a greater reach at the grass root level. A. Jeyapal, District Coordinator, Special Olympics Bharath - Tamil Nadu, welcomed the gathering.
