The Madurai Municipal Corporation has started clearing garbage accumulated during Wednesday’s Deepavali celebrations.
On Thursday, the garbage processing unit at Vellaikkal received 823 tonnes of waste collected by 533 vehicles — 196 tonnes from Zone 1 of Madurai Corporation; 180 tonnes from Zone 2; 208 tonnes from Zone 3; and 239 tonnes from Zone 4.
Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa inspected the work at South Avani Moola Street, Venkala Kadai Street, Vilakkuthoon and South Masi Street.

“The large amount of garbage accumulated during Deepavali is being removed on a war footing. Stagnant rainwater will be drained and the health wing will take efforts to prevent disease outbreak in the city,” Mr. Chellappa said.
