The police have formed special teams to secure the accused who had planted explosives atop the Tirupparankundram hill, which were removed swiftly on Thursday.

Following information that a plastic bucket containing accessories and materials with which IED (improvised explosives device) could be fabricated, the special investigation team (SIT) and Madurai District Police teams accompanied by Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad removed the explosives from the hillock. Superintendent of Police V. Balakrishnan who inspected the seized explosives at the Avaniapuram police station said that they have gathered some vital clues in the case and special teams have been formed.

Meanwhile, a representation from the Muslims was made to the police to find out the culprits who had planted the explosives, near the dargah. An oral representation from a Hindu outfit was also made to arrest the suspects.

With the “karthigai deepam” festival scheduled for November 27 and the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary falling on December 6, the police are hopeful of cracking the sensitive case soon.

Old cases

There are as many as seven cases reported in Madurai City and in rural pockets where unidentified miscreants had planted explosives. In some cases, there were minor blasts, while in some incidents, on information, the police had swiftly defused the explosives.
