The Tirupparankundram railway overbridge (RoB) was formally inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa through videoconferencing from Chennai on Monday.
The 568-metre-long RoB, the construction of which took over two years, connects Madurai to Tirupparankundram.
The RoBs at Tirupparankundram and Palanganatham were planned in 2008 to help avoid traffic snarls caused due to the frequent passing of passenger trains on this route.

An official from the Highways Department said the fencing work under the bridge was still pending and it was expected to be completed by the first week of December.
City students studying at various educational institutions or devotees visiting the Sri Subramaniaswamy Temple had to wait at the railway level-crossing to reach Tirupparankundram.
“Usually, there would be heavy traffic here after 6 p.m. when most trains pass this point, forcing the closure of the gate. We hope the bridge will end the problem,” said a commuter from Tirupparankundram.

The Palanganatham RoB, constructed to connect Madakulam to TVS Nagar and Jaihindpuram, is expected to be ready by early next year.
