The third unit of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS) with a capacity of 210 MW was shutdown for a 15-day overhaulingon Thursday.
During this schedule, some minor works would be taken up in this unit and mandatory checks carried out. The worn out devices would be replaced and boiler licence renewed. The overhauling was actually scheduled on May 16, but delayed for some reasons, sources said.
To make use of the increasing wind energy production and capitalize on this scenario, power generation from this thermal unit was suspended in order to take up overhauling work. Due to high wind energy generation in recent times, the first unit of TTPS with a 210 MW capacity has already been kept on standby. Currently, only three units including second, fourth and fifth with a capacity of 210 MW each, had been generating power, sources said.

Of the total wind energy output, 69.16 million units were generated from the southern region of Tamil Nadu. On Thursday, the output stood at 2,500 MW in the Tirunelveli Circle alone, sources pointed out.
Further on May 31, Tamil Nadu achieved 99.559 million units in power generation from all stations by means of non conventional energy sources. Earlier, 92 million units had been the highest wind energy generation recorded in the State.

Of the total generation, sources said 91.436 million units of wind energy, including 56 million units from wind turbines in the potential sites such as Aralvaimozhi, Shencottah and Kayathar under Tirunelveli Circle of Non Conventional Energy Source, TANGEDCO, were generated.
Besides, 8.123 million units of solar power were generated from Kamudhi, Aruppukottai, Tiruchuli, Thoothukudi under the Tirunelveli Circle and also from solar panels in Karur and Tiruchi, sources also said.
