Chief Minister Jayalalithaa declared open the new premises of the office of Superintendent of Police at Surveyor Colony on Alagarkoil Road here through video conferencing facility from Chennai on Monday.
In a brief address, Ms. Jayalalithaa appealed to the police personnel to be friendly, be humane and serve the needy sincerely. “The government's top priority is to maintain law and order and I assure all support to officials in discharging their duties,” she said.
Collector U. Sagayam said that for a district to be progressive in all spheres, peace of the residents was essential. Welfare programmes of the government were being implemented in an effective manner in the district and the goals would be achieved, he said.

Superintendent of Police Asra Garg thanked the Chief Minister for dedicating the spacious premises “which will be highly beneficial to the public and police personnel.” People found difficult to approach police officers at the existing District Police Office being housed in a very old building near Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. The new multi-storeyed building was served by public transport facilities and easily approachable, he said.
All under one roof
The building, which has come up on a three-acre sprawling campus, has been constructed on an outlay of Rs. 3.50 crore with over 10,000 square feet of built area. The office would have all key wings such as fingerprint, Special Branch office, crime, ministerial staff section, bomb detection and disposal squad, anti-land grab wing among others. There is a conference hall and adequate space for car parking.

Mr. Garg said that people can submit petitions to him at the new office from Wednesday.
Inspector General (South Zone) in-charge and Commissioner of Police (Madurai City) P. Kannappan; Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dindigul Range) Sanjay Mathur; and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Madurai City, R. Thirunavukkarasu, among other officers participated.
Other new facilities
The Chief Minister also declared open a new building for Tirumangalam police station built at a cost of Rs. 36.34 lakh, housing quarters for police personnel at Kottampatti on an outlay of Rs. 1.11 crore, and at Keelavalavu at a cost of Rs 44 lakh in the district.
