Fifty-five students were arrested when they tried to lay siege to the All India Radio office premises here on Thursday. However, they were released later in the day.

The students, under the banner of Tamileela Viduthalai Manavargal Iyakkam, had announced through posters that they would lay siege to the Regional Office of Employees’ Provident Fund at Chokkikulam.

Huge posse of police personnel were deployed at the PF office as well as the All India Radio station office located adjacent to it on the Lady Doak College Road. The students who gathered at the P.T. Rajan Road junction near the PF office raised slogans against the Sri Lankan Government and the Centre.

The students who proceeded towards the PF office suddenly marched ahead towards the AIR office. Though the police blocked them, the students attempted to break the cordon.

The agitators also resisted the arrest and also raised slogans condemning the police for stopping them.
