A day of enlightenment for scores of them

It was a day of enlightenment for scores of students, parents and academicians who attended the The Hindu Education Plus Career Counselling Fair 2013 at Raja Muthiah Mandram here on Saturday, as they were provided with news, views and in-depth analysis of various career prospects by expert speakers.

The participants came to know the commonality among writer Chetan Bhagat, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, cricketers Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath and film actors Nagarjuna and Arya when A.N.Brijesh Nair of VIT University told them that all these celebrities were engineers who had chosen to pursue their passion as their profession.

“Nitish Kumar did his electrical engineering as per his father’s wish. But the day he completed the course, he told his father categorically ‘I have done engineering for your sake but my career is in politics.’ These examples tell you that even if you are forced to study what you don’t want to study, you can pursue your passion on the side,” Mr. Nair said.

Referring to Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, he said they had succeeded in their professions because they don’t work for money; rather they get paid for doing what they love to do.

“If watching movies is what you like, choose a career where you will get paid hefty for watching movies and writing reviews about it,” he advised the students.

In his thought-provoking speech on ‘Holistic Development,’ student motivator and television personality T.A.Venkateswaran alias ‘Isaikavi’ Ramanan advised students to slow down in life and enjoy its beauty rather than being in a rat race.

Stressing the importance of developing inner strength, he said: “You must not get lost when life tosses you up and down.”

He also warned the younger generation against letting down their mother nation by speaking ill of it to others. “I have visited several countries and I can say with confidence that there is no other country as great as ours and no other culture as vibrant as ours,” he said. Mr.Venkateswaran captivated the audience by singing a few popular and inspiring songs in his mellifluous voice.
