Storage level in major dams up

Storage in Manjalar and Sothuparai dams went up sharply and inflow into Periyar and Vaigai dams rose substantially owing to torrential showers in Theni and Dindigul districts and moderate showers in the Western Ghats in the early hours of Thursday.

Water level rose from 29 feet to 31 feet in Manjalar dam and from 85 feet to 86.10 feet in Sothuparai dam.

Dindigul, Chinnalapatti, Kodai Road, Nilakottai, Vedasandur and Palani experienced torrential showers on Wednesday night.

The total rainfall in the district was 407.63 mm and the average 40.76 mm.

Low-lying areas were flooded with rainwater.

Rainfall recorded at various places at 8 a.m. on Thursday was (in mm): Dindigul – 49.28, Kodaikanal – 10, Kodaikanal Boat Club – 5.75, Natham – 38, Nilakotti – 17.2, Palani – 81, Vedasandur – 44, Parapalar dam – 63, Chatrapatti – 33.3, Vedasandur Tobacco Station – 44 mm, Kamatchipuram – 88, Vaigai dam – 102, Peranai – 25, Kuppanampatti – 5, Andipatti – 5, Madurai – 31, Sathiaru – 47, Malampatti – 30, Kallanthiri – 22, Chittampatti – 41, Pulipatti – 67, Melur – 33, Thaniamangalam – 49, Idayapatti – 34.2, Viraganoor – 19, Periyar – 5, Gudalur – 23.5, Thekkadi – 8.6, Shanmuganadhi dam – 5, Uthamaplayam – 25, Veerapandi – 28, Manjalaru dam – 65, Marudhanadhi dam – 141 and Sothuparai – 42.
